Equipped to lead in the era of innovation and technology! ***** This certification program is a collaboration of AI CERTs® and The Institute of Internal Auditors One thing that stood out: AI needs to be designed with discipline from the start, not managed after the fact. While anchored on Global Internal Audit Standard 9.5, the program also draws from frameworks like NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework, COSO ERM, and ISACA COBIT, showing that responsible AI applies across the three lines of defense and in virtually any environment where AI is embedded. The value I personally liked was in seeing governance evolve in practice, embedding measurable controls, monitoring outputs, ensuring transparency and explainability, and connecting frameworks to operational methods and tools. AI doesn’t replace judgment: it amplifies it. Critical thinking, professional skepticism, and accountability remain central. I used to be very good at what I did. Now… I’m not. That’s the part nobody includes in the “AI reskilling” narrative. We talk about speed. Adaptability. Learning new tools. We don’t talk about the professional identity cost. Since August 2025, I stepped into entrepreneurship. Which, stripped of any romanticism, means: I’m doing sales, business development, positioning, operations, coaching, + + + … while simultaneously trying to understand and integrate AI. In other words: I replaced mastery with exposure. And here’s where it got uncomfortable: I caught myself measuring my performance in these new arenas with the standards of my former self. High-performing HR leader. Clear results. Recognized competence. Now? In many of these areas, I’m structurally a beginner. And a part of me translated that as: decline. Today, as I was studying AI, a simple thought landed: The market is not only facing a skills crisis. It’s facing a professional role identity crisis too. There’s a story about a student going to a monk to learn. [The monk pours water into the student’s cup… and keeps pouring, and pouring, long after it overflows. “Stop. It’s full,” the student says. “Exactly,” the monk replies. “How can I teach you if your cup is already full?”] In theory, this is simple. In practice, it’s brutal. Because that “full cup” is not just knowledge. It’s: • results • reputation • sense of control • proof of achieving Spilling it feels irrational. Why would you let go of something that still works? Here is the part I don’t see discussed enough in leadership rooms: Reskilling is not additive. It is subtractive first. Before you build new capability, you destabilize existing ones. And here’s the constraint most people don’t realize: You cannot perform like an expert while learning like a beginner. One identity will block the other. The journey from expert in an old skill to expert in a new skill goes through the valley of despair, trial and error, fail and doubt. What becomes critical is not just what you learn, but: • What capabilities are truly transferable? • What thinking patterns still serve in a different context? • What needs to be consciously retired, even if it still “works”? Because holding onto everything… is exactly what keeps the cup full. AI is accelerating this for all of us. Not (only) because it replaces jobs. It compresses the time available to reinvent how we create value. Right now, I’m learning to sit in a space that is unfamiliar: Being competent… but not yet effective. Being experienced… but not yet relevant in the new game. … here’s the paradox: While in this space, I achieved the AI+ Foundation™ certification with AI CERTs® — a rigorous process that made one thing very clear: You can be validated on knowledge and still in development on execution.
