Why AI Training Programs Must Teach Explainable AI

MIT researchers created a technique enabling AI to explain predictions clearly. As trust becomes critical, demand rises for explainable AI skills. AI CERTs ATP Program empowers partners to deliver responsible AI education.

MIT Breaks New Ground in Explainable AI

In March 2026, researchers at MIT published a study that could change how we think about AI decision-making. The team created a method that helps computer vision models explain their predictions using words that humans can understand.

Here is how it works. Most AI models are like black boxes. They give you an answer but do not tell you why. A new type of model called a concept bottleneck model (CBM) adds a middle step. It forces the AI to name the concepts it sees in an image before making a final prediction.

For example, if an AI is looking at a medical image, it might say: “I see clustered brown dots and uneven pigmentation” before predicting melanoma. This makes the AI’s thinking visible.

The MIT team took this further. Instead of asking human experts to define the concepts in advance, they let the AI pull out the concepts it had already learned. A tool called a sparse autoencoder picked the most useful features. Then a large language model described those features in plain English.

The result? Better accuracy and clearer explanations. Their method beat other top models when tested on tasks like identifying bird species and detecting skin conditions.

Lead author Antonio De Santis said the goal was to “read the minds” of computer vision models. By using better concepts, the method can improve the accountability of black-box AI systems.

This research will be presented at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR). It signals a wider shift in AI development — one where transparency and trust are no longer optional features. They are requirements.

Explainable AI Is No Longer Optional

The MIT study reflects a larger trend. Across industries, organizations want AI they can explain. Regulators demand it. Customers expect it. And AI professionals need to know how to build it.

The Numbers Tell the Story

The global explainable AI market was valued at around $9.73 billion in 2025 and is set to grow to $11.74 billion in 2026 — a CAGR of 20.6%. By 2030, it is expected to surpass $25 billion.

The overall AI market is growing just as fast. It was valued at $294 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $375 billion in 2026 and $2.48 trillion by 2034.

North America leads the explainable AI market with a significant global share. But Asia Pacific is growing the fastest, expected to expand untill 2035. This is a global opportunity.

Why Industries Need Explainable AI Now

  1. Healthcare: Doctors need to understand why an AI flagged a certain diagnosis before acting on it.
  1. Finance: Banks must explain why a loan was denied or a transaction flagged as fraud.
  1. Autonomous Vehicles: Safety engineers must audit why a self-driving car made a specific decision.
  1. Government and Public Sector: AI tools used in policy must be transparent to the public.

All of this points to one clear need: professionals trained in explainable AI and responsible AI practices. And that means AI training programs must evolve to include these topics.

The Skills Gap Is Real — And Growing

Despite the surge in AI adoption, a significant skills gap exists. A recent IBM survey found that 40% of workers will need to reskill in the next three years because of AI. Yet many training programs still focus only on building AI models, not on making them transparent or trustworthy.

The demand is clear. Organizations need people who understand not just how to use AI, but how to explain it, audit it, and use it responsibly. This includes skills in:

  1. Concept bottleneck modeling and interpretable machine learning
  1. AI ethics and fairness assessment
  1. Regulatory compliance for AI (like the EU AI Act and FDA guidelines)
  1. Communicating AI decisions to non-technical stakeholders

Traditional degree programs are too slow to respond. Companies need trained workers now. This is where certified AI training comes in — and where the opportunity for educators, trainers, and institutions is massive.

What Are AI Training Programs Doing About This?

The best AI training programs are not just teaching how to build models. They are teaching how to build trustworthy models. This includes courses on explainable AI, AI governance, prompt engineering, and responsible AI deployment.

AICERTs has been at the forefront of this shift. As a leading certification body in artificial intelligence, AICERTs offers a range of certifications that cover both technical and ethical AI skills. These include certifications in generative AI, prompt engineering, AI security, and responsible AI.

What sets AICERTs apart is its partner ecosystem. Through the AI CERTs Authorized Training Partner (ATP) Program, AICERTs empowers organizations around the world to deliver these certifications to their own learners.

The AI CERTs Authorized Training Partner (ATP) Program

The AICERTs ATP Program is designed for training providers, universities, corporate learning teams, and independent educators who want to offer world-class AI certifications.

As an authorized training partner, you get access to:

  1. Official AICERTs courseware and curriculum

Why Explainable AI Must Be Part of AI Training Curricula

The MIT research is a clear signal: the future of AI is not just intelligent — it is explainable. AI models that cannot justify their decisions will face growing resistance from regulators, users, and the public.

AI training programs that ignore this trend will produce graduates who are not ready for the real world. But programs that teach explainable AI, responsible AI, and AI ethics will produce professionals who are in high demand.

AICERTs understands this. Its certifications are designed to cover both the technical side of AI (how to build and deploy models) and the responsible side (how to make those models fair, transparent, and explainable).

When you become an authorized training partner with AICERTs, you are not just offering certifications. You are offering a path into the future of AI — a future where trust, accountability, and human understanding are built into every system.

Recent Developments That Reinforce This Trend

The MIT study is not an isolated event. Several recent developments highlight why explainable AI training is urgent:

  1. EU AI Act (2024-2026 rollout): The European Union’s AI Act requires high-risk AI systems to be transparent and explainable. This is forcing companies across Europe to audit and document their AI systems.
  1. IBM and AWS Partnership (May 2025): IBM and Amazon Web Services announced new tools for AI governance and explainability, including watsonx.governance, to help enterprises ensure transparent AI operations.
  1. FDA AI Guidance (2025): The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued updated guidelines for AI in medical devices, emphasizing the need for explainability and human oversight.
  1. Fujitsu Explainable AI for Healthcare (2024): Fujitsu developed an explainable AI system using multimodal data to support cancer treatment decisions, showing the real-world application of interpretable AI.

Each of these developments creates demand for professionals with explainable AI skills. Each is a reason why AI training programs need to evolve — and why authorized training partners who deliver these skills are in a strong position.
